Five Farm Business Resolutions for 2021

Most people make some sort of personal resolution at the beginning of each year, but what about your farming operation? Resolve to make your agricultural operation operate better this year! What key items can you focus on this year that will make you more successful than last year? We have a few thoughts on that:

1.    Change is coming. Get prepared!

As the saying goes, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” While you can’t plan for everything (who would have guessed we’d deal with a pandemic in 2020?), you can position yourself for success. What can you expect from the presidential administration? Is there new technology that you should consider adopting? Is your operation flexible and adaptable enough to deal with the weather in 2021? Make a list and begin asking the tough questions and do your research so you can make the most of the upcoming season as sometimes, flexibility creates opportunity.

2.    Building your network can build your net worth.

Join the club! Why ‘go it alone’ when knowledge is power. Getting involved in the right organization gives you the chance to gather the latest information, find good sounding boards, share your wisdom, and learn about the pitfalls others have encountered in their years of farming. There are many regional and national organizations for farmers who grow various crops or raise specific livestock. If you’re not already active, we encourage you to ask around or get online and check out some that interest you. If you are already a member of an organization, consider stepping up your involvement.

3.    Go by the numbers.

Are you making the most of your machine data? With CLAAS TELEMATICS, you can view historical data, so you can analyze it to improve your operational practices. Share the numbers from all of your equipment with your agronomists and consultants, and see how you can improve.

4.    When in doubt, YouTube it out!

Make the most of online resources. The amount of information out there is absolutely mind boggling. When you want to find different ways to make machine adjustments, how to drive more efficiency, look at reviews, see what new equipment is coming out and more, check out channels like YouTube. If you are a hands on, do-it-yourselfer, YouTube is a dream – through tutorials and step-by-step guides, you will be well on your way to operating excellence. By the way, the CLAAS of America YouTube Channel is an excellent resource with dozens of tips and tricks videos top help you make the most of your CLAAS equipment. Sometimes the best ideas come from those that have been through the same situation.

5.    Focus on You. (This one has two parts.)

How do you want to grow personally?

Increasing your skill level never ends. Make a list of what skills you need to improve upon or something new that you want to learn about.

  • Is it to increase your capacity or to learn more about technology?
  • To make your machine data work for you?
  • To increase your bu/acre by a certain percentage?
  • To gain a clearer understanding of the impacts of the farm bill?

Select three goals that matter to you most and write down how you will take action to achieve.

Don’t forget to take time for yourself and your family.

When is the last time you took some time to relax? You are hard-wired to work hard, and you put in long hours. Be sure to take some time to recharge. Take the kids hunting or fishing. Or, when the inevitable blizzard or rainstorm hits, take that day to watch a movie with the family, or just spend some quality time on the couch. You may be surprised at how much better you feel – and how much more productive you are – when you get back to work.
